Machiya Stool

A small piece with an architectural design

Created by Japanese designer Jin Kuramoto, the Machiya stool by Sika-Design translates features of traditional Japanese townhouses into furniture. Their slatted façades and space-saving layouts inspire its open lines and the shelf beneath the seat.

This stool is made from natural rattan worked by hand by skilled wicker craftspeople. Softened with steam, the rattan can be bent using traditional techniques and simple tools. The natural finish complements the flowing lines and highlights the joints.

A place to sit, a place to store

Designed for indoor use, Machiya offers occasional seating and accessible lower storage. Its size makes it suitable for a hallway, bedroom or living space, while its open frame keeps it from looking bulky. This model is part of the ICONS collection.
