How to choose a comfortable and well-proportioned armchair?

The armchair can complement a sofa, create a reading corner or become the main seat in a small room. Its comfort depends as much on its proportions and support as on its padding. Before choosing, define the use, the available space and the desired posture.

Determine the main use of the chair

To read or relax for a long time, look for a sufficiently high backrest, stable support and well-placed armrests. An accent chair can be more compact and more upright. In a bedroom or entrance, check that it does not obstruct the opening of a door or access to storage.

Compare seat width, depth and height

Measure the total footprint, not just the width of the cushion. A deep seat promotes a relaxed posture but may be less suitable for shorter people. A higher seat generally makes getting up easier. Also check the height of the armrests and the necessary space around the feet or the swivel base.

Evaluate the support and the feeling of sitting

The firmness felt depends on the foam, straps, springs and general construction. A thick cushion is not automatically softer. Observe the shape of the backrest, lumbar support and tilt. If you want to add a footrest, bring its dimensions and height closer to those of the armchair.

Choose the covering and maintenance

Fabric and velvet offer a warm touch, leather has a patina and looped materials give more relief. Each coating reacts differently to light, stains and animals. Check the care instructions, composition and possible color variations before choosing the variant.

Delivery and integration into the room

Check the weight, packaged dimensions, possible assembly and the announced deadline. Measure doors, hallways, stairs and elevators, especially for a wide model or delivered assembled. In the living room, leave enough space with the coffee table and the passages so that the armchair remains pleasant to use on a daily basis.
