Pictures of people: choose a presence, not just an image

The most common mistake is to become immediately attached to a face, silhouette or pose without imagining its effect once installed. Enlarged on a wall, a gaze can become intense; placed in a narrow space, an animated group can appear too dense. A picture of a person succeeds when it creates the right relationship with the room, its volumes and the people who move through it.

Go beyond a simple attraction to a face

Start by identifying what truly attracts you: the expression, movement, colours, graphic treatment or suggested story. This distinction helps avoid a decision based solely on the theme. A contemplative figure can establish calm in a bedroom or reading corner. A group scene naturally energises a dining room. Assess the figure's presence in the space

A small artwork is not necessarily discreet: strong contrast or a frontal gaze can give it considerable authority. Conversely, a large format in soft tones can remain calming. Assess the open space around the picture, the viewing distance and the height from which it will most often be seen.
