Tablecloths and table runners reshape the meal

A decorator sees more than a textile placed on a tabletop: they observe a surface, lines and volumes to orchestrate. A tablecloth unifies the table and changes its presence in the room. A more graphic table runner guides the eye or creates a central area. Their effect comes from the relationship between the fabric, furniture, place settings and surrounding space.

Read the proportions of the tabletop

Record the table’s shape and dimensions, then check those of each model. A more pronounced drop creates an enveloping impression, while a contained presence leaves more of the furniture visible. On a round, square or elongated table, the same design will not create the same rhythm.

Set a direction with the table runner

Placed lengthwise, the runner emphasises perspective. Arranged across the table, it can define pairs of guests. Used alone, it reveals the tabletop; layered over a tablecloth, it adds a second plane. Make sure it does not obstruct plates or serving dishes intended to circulate.

Create rhythm through colour

A continuous shade calms the composition, while contrast draws the eye towards the centre. Patterns add cadence: their scale should work with that of the table and the number of objects already present.

Coordinate with the tableware and room

Observe the floor, seating and ambient light. A highly expressive table sometimes benefits from an understated textile. Conversely, minimalist tableware can leave more room for a bold tablecloth or runner.
