St Catherine teak bench

A bench connected to architecture and landscape

The St Catherine bench by Sika-Design follows a design created by Arne Jacobsen in 1935 for the villa of wholesaler Helge Wandel. In the late 1950s, the bench was subsequently incorporated into the park project associated with St Catherine’s College in Oxford.

This attention to garden furniture reflects Jacobsen's interest in botany. With a keen eye for landscapes, the architect extended his thinking to the spaces surrounding buildings. The bench thus finds a natural place on a terrace or in a garden.

Teak for outdoor spaces

Made from Indonesian plantation teak, St Catherine benefits from this wood's weather-resistant qualities. Its natural colour changes with exposure to sun and rain, gradually developing a silver-grey patina.

The bench measures 180 cm in width, 67 cm in depth and 84 cm in height, with a seat height of 40 cm. It is supplied without a cushion, keeping the wood and the furniture's lines in the foreground for outdoor seating with an understated presence.
