Machiya bench

A silhouette inspired by Japanese homes

The Machiya bench by Sika-Design was created by Japanese designer Jin Kuramoto. Its design takes inspiration from traditional Japanese townhouses, built side by side and recognisable by their slatted façades. This reference is reflected in the rhythm of its frame and the integration of a lower shelf, making use of the space beneath the seat.

Made from natural rattan shaped by hand by skilled wicker craftspeople, it uses traditional techniques: steam softens the material so it can be shaped. Its natural finish reveals the character of the rattan and highlights the curves of the assembled elements.

Seating and storage in one

Designed for indoor use, Machiya can complement a hallway or find a place in a living space. Its integrated storage shelf keeps the space beneath the seat accessible without adding a separate piece of furniture. It belongs to the ICONS collection.
