A Mukinka mask associated with Salampasu ceremonies

The Mukinka AAA275 mask offered by Versmissen comes from the Salampasu tribe in Zaire and dates from the 20th century. Crafted from wood, copper and raffia, it measures 19,5 × 21 × 39 cm. Its domed forehead is framed by encircling cane work and topped with wicker balls forming a particularly dense headdress.

The face features a flared nose, pointed teeth and a mesh made from copper strips. These elements evoke the warrior ceremony with which this type of mask was associated. Mukinka masks were also used during funerals and initiations. Some inspired such fear that merely mentioning their name could frighten women and children. The AAA275 piece thus brings together several characteristic features of this Salampasu ceremonial tradition.
