A Mukinka mask associated with Salampasu ceremonies

The Mukinka mask AAA1638 presented by Versmissen belongs to the Salampasu tradition and comes from Zaire. Dating from the mid-20th century, it has a domed forehead crowned with encircled cane work. Wicker balls form a dense hairstyle above the face. The flared nose, pointed teeth and mesh of copper strips enhance its striking expression.

Made of wood and raffia, this mask measures 21 x 37 x 21,5 cm. It is associated with warrior ceremonies as well as funerals and initiations. Some masks of this type were described as so feared that merely mentioning them could frighten women and children. Classified as a wall decoration, this piece combines carving, cane work and applied elements in a structured composition.
