A Mwana Pwo mask from Chokwe culture

The Mwana Pwo AAA21 mask comes from the Chokwe people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dating from the mid-20th century, it is carved from wood and measures 13 x 21,5 x 31 cm. The piece offered by Versmissen features a Saint Andrew's cross on the upper face, known as Chingely Engelye among the Chokwe.

The mouth displays teeth depicted in a pointed form, referring to a historical aesthetic practice of dental modification among the Chokwe and other groups in the region. The carved details are complemented by a patina and visible incisions on the surface. Together, these elements create a mask shaped by the visual codes and cultural history of the Chokwe people.
