A Kuba mask associated with the figure of Bwoom

The Kuba AAA284 mask offered by Versmissen represents Bwoom, one of the figures linked to the Kuba foundation myth in Congo. Bwoom is presented as the rebellious brother of Mwaash Amboy, regarded as the first Kuba king. This type of mask belongs to the set of three royal masks and is notably recognisable by its broad nose.

Without eye holes, the mask allowed dancers to see through the nostrils. Its composition combines wood, fabric, beads and cowrie shells in a natural finish. Dating from the 20th century, it measures 40 x 25 x 33.5 cm.
