Deangle mask

This Deangle Dan mask, originally from Côte d'Ivoire, is a fine example of African art and culture. It dates from the middle of the 20th century and measures 7x11x25 cm. The mask is carved from natural wood and represents a male spirit. The face is oval and harmonious, with a high, bulging forehead. The eyes are narrow, outlined slits, the nose is small, and the mouth is open, prominent and accentuated. Deangle masks are used during Dan youth initiation ceremonies. They are meant to represent the protective spirits that guide young people in their transition to adulthood. It is a unique piece.
