Metoko sculpture

During the initiatory rites, female and male figures emerged jointly, welcoming the souls of the deceased before their passage to the afterlife, and then were left in the forest. Adorned with white kaolin dots, this wooden and cowrie sculpture, measuring 14x32.5x77 cm, testifies to the spiritual heritage of the Metoko rites in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A true treasure of the 20th century, rich in symbolism and tradition.
