A sculpture associated with Metoko initiation rites

The Metoko AAA1497 sculpture offered by Versmissen is a natural-coloured wooden figure from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dating from the 20th century, it measures 14 × 32,5 × 77 cm. Its upright presence and figurative treatment reflect the spiritual heritage associated with Metoko initiation rites and their human representations.

During these rites, female and male figures emerged together to welcome the souls of the deceased before their passage into the afterlife. After the ceremonies, they were left in the forest. Accounts of this tradition also mention decorations consisting of white kaolin dots. This sculpture thus reflects a ceremonial context in which figures played a role in representing the passage of the deceased.
