A female figure from the Dogon tradition

This N'duleri sculpture offered by Versmissen depicts a woman in a kneeling posture. Originating from Mali and dating from the mid-20th century, it is crafted from wood in a natural shade. Its vertical silhouette and 24 × 18,5 × 81,5 cm dimensions highlight the figure's posture and the expressive presence of this Dogon figure.

In the tradition described, kneeling female figures were placed on altars inside Dogon homes to receive sacrificial offerings. They also played a role in a sacred ritual context, notably in girls' education and during funeral ceremonies. The AAA1186 sculpture thus reflects a function that combined human representation, transmission and ceremonial practices.
