A female N'duleri figure from the Dogon tradition

The N'duleri AAA1189 sculpture depicts a kneeling female figure from Dogon culture. Originating from Mali and dating from the mid-20th century, this wooden piece presented by Versmissen measures 21,5 x 18,5 x 84 cm. Its upright, kneeling posture corresponds to that of figures traditionally placed on household altars.

These sculptures received sacrificial offerings and fulfilled sacred ritual functions. They notably played a role in girls' education and funeral ceremonies. The female representation thus belongs to a specific cultural context in which sculpture was closely linked to domestic practices, transmission and the various ritual occasions of the Dogon community.
