Namji Fertility Doll Sculpture

A richly adorned, stylised Namji figure

Originating from Cameroon and dating from the mid-20th century, the Namji Fertility Doll AAA1320 sculpture depicts a highly stylised human form. This wooden piece selected by Versmissen measures 6 x 8 x 17 cm. Its small, proportionally incised head has a distinctive expression, while geometric lines structure the entire silhouette.

The torso is adorned with several rows of red and blue beads to which cowrie shells are attached. One ankle is also decorated with multicoloured beads. This type of doll was given to young Namji girls both as a toy and to prepare them for their future role as mothers. The ornaments and carving create a figure with varied details.
