A Téké figure with pronounced sculptural lines

Reference AAA159, the Janus Matomba sculpture presented by Versmissen is a work in brown wood from the Téké people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dating from the mid-20th century, it depicts a figure structured around a vertical posture and clearly defined forms.

The figure is characterised by slightly bent legs and a column-shaped torso framed by arms bent at right angles. Its enlarged head features typical linear facial scarification and a trapezoidal beard. The combination of these elements gives the sculpture a geometric, structured composition. The posture, treatment of the face and shape of the beard bring together the main visual characteristics described for this mid-20th-century Téké work.
