A maternal figure from the Bambara tradition

The Dyonyeni AAA869 sculpture offered by Versmissen is a unique piece from Mali dating from the mid-20th century. Carved in wood by the Bambara people, it depicts a maternal figure associated with Faro, the goddess of water and mother of humanity in this tradition. Faro is also associated with several natural phenomena, including rain, rainbows, thunder and lightning. The silhouette is distinguished by strong geometric forms and conical or rounded breasts.

Dyonyeni figures were closely associated with the Dyo societies of the south and with Kwore. Blacksmiths from the Dyo society used them during dances celebrating the end of initiation ceremonies. They were actively handled and then placed at the centre of the ceremonial circle. Measuring 26 x 21 x 98 cm, this brown piece has a striking vertical presence.
