A hybrid Ngil figure associated with the Bulu people

The Bulu Gorilla AAA1122 sculpture offered by Versmissen is a Ngil fetish associated with the Bulu people of Central Africa. Made from wood and metal, it depicts a hybrid being: the body takes a human form, while the head resembles a gorilla. Large, prominent eyes and an open, grimacing mouth heighten its expression.

Originating from Cameroon, this work dates from the mid-20th century. It probably belonged to a senior initiate of the Ngil cult and was likely used during ritual ceremonies to invoke the protection of the gorilla Ngi. The sculpture measures 25 x 23 x 83 cm. Its vertical silhouette, natural beige colour and accentuated features emphasise its figurative character.
