A Fang bellows sculpted in a female form
The Blacksmith Bellow AAA1536 sculpture presented by Versmissen is a Fang blacksmith’s bellows originating from Gabon. It combines metal, leather and wood. Two solid chambers covered with a loose skin diaphragm form its mechanism. Ropes attached to the chambers enabled the blacksmith’s assistant to operate the bellows.
The structure is carved in the form of a woman, with an elongated head, almond-shaped eyes and a narrow mouth. This mid-20th-century work is associated with Fang and Punu arts and cultures. It measures 74 x 36 x 22 cm and features a natural beige color. Its figurative appearance adds an artistic dimension to its original utilitarian function.
