A Fang blacksmith’s bellows with sculptural value
The Blacksmith Bellow AAA1537 sculpture by Versmissen is a Fang blacksmith’s bellows originating from Gabon. Made of metal, leather and wood, the object consists of two solid chambers covered with a loose skin diaphragm. Its structure combines several materials in a construction that is both functional and artistic.
The described mechanism relied on ropes attached to both chambers: the blacksmith’s assistant pulled them to pump the bellows. Dating from the mid-20th century, this piece measures 69 x 39,5 x 22 cm. Its natural beige color and substantial volume make its construction clearly visible. It reflects the art and culture of the Fang people referenced in its history.
