Ancestor Bassa Fecondity sculpture

This beautiful old Byeri supply/offering box whose base is made of bark. Its lid features a delicate sculpture of a seated male figurine, symbolizing ancestors. The guardian figures, called O Eyema Byeri, are mysterious and iconic in African art. This byeri, composed of two parts, the Nsekh O Byeri made of bark and the figurine at the top, was used for storing ancestral relics and for the rituals dedicated to them. Measuring 27x24x101 cm, this wooden piece from the mid-20th century embodies cultural and artistic wealth. This work originated in Liberia.
