A Byeri box topped with an ancestral figure

The Ancestor Bassa Fecondity sculpture selected by Versmissen consists of a Byeri box with a base made from bark. Its lid supports a seated male figurine, carved from wood and associated with the representation of ancestors. These guardian figures, known as O Eyema Byeri, hold an emblematic place in the presentation of African art.

The piece consists of two parts: the Nsekh O Byeri made from bark and the figurine placed on top. This type of container was used to store ancestral relics and for rituals dedicated to them. Originating from Liberia and dating from the mid-20th century, this sculpture has a natural colour with beige tones. Its dimensions are 27 × 24 × 101 cm.
