The Ashanti Fertility sculpture draws inspiration from Akuaba fertility dolls, which hold a special place in Ashanti culture. Traditionally, these figures are associated with representations of idealised beauty and rituals related to motherhood. Crafted from black wood, this Versmissen creation reinterprets the symbolic silhouette of these cultural objects in a slender, upright form.

Akuaba dolls are traditionally carried on certain days by expectant mothers and may also be placed on the family altar. Their use forms part of a broader ritual that may include potions, baths or washing with infusions. This sculpture therefore evokes a tradition whose significance extends beyond its appearance alone. Measuring 7 x 11,5 x 27,5 cm, it is a compact decorative figure enhanced by the depth of its black colour.
