Yombe sculpture

A sculpture inspired by Yombe power figures

The Yombe sculpture by Versmissen appears to draw inspiration from power figures created by the Yombe people. Carved from natural-coloured wood, it is particularly distinguished by the presence of an internal cavity. This feature gives the figure a distinctive construction and supports its comparison with certain fetish mirror statues.

It is thought that this cavity may have been sealed with mirror glass, as seen on other rare statues made by the Yombe people, although this hypothesis has not been confirmed for this piece. These representations were designed to provide protection against evil. The sculpture measures 24,5 x 25,5 x 52,5 cm.
