Byeri storage box

A Byeri box associated with Fang ancestral relics

The Byeri storage box offered by Versmissen consists of a bark lower section topped by a male figure carved from wood. Metal elements complete its composition. With dimensions of 36 x 35 x 112 cm, it forms a vertical object in natural and beige tones, distinguished by the presence of its guardian figure.

Originating from Gabon and associated with the Fang people, this mid-20th-century box was used to preserve ancestral relics and pay tribute to them. Byeri reliquary guardian figures hold an iconic place in African art. Here, the combination of the container and sculpture expresses the object's ritual and commemorative function.
